Food safety is a big priority in Danish pig production, and Denmark is well known the world over for supplying high quality meat.
As an industry, we work hard to ensure high hygiene levels and to avoid undesirable bacteria in our animals and the meat produced from them. The successful 10 year programme to reduce levels of salmonella in the Danish pig industry has been much admired and many countries are beginning to draw on the Danish experiences.
Denmark was the first major pig producing country to eliminate the use of antibiotic growth promoters in feed for pigs. Their use was stopped in January 2000, six years before similar action was taken by most other European producers.
Producing robust and healthy pigs is also a priority for Danish farmers. Although medicines are used to treat unwell animals, their use in Denmark is strictly controlled and it’s almost unheard of to find any traces of medicines in Danish pork and bacon.
